Purge-victim noncommissioned officer commits suicide in Germany

Mesut Karaboyun, a 32-year-old noncommissioned officer who was fired from his job in the aftermath of a failed coup attempt in 2016, committed suicide on Sunday in Munich, Germany.

The purge-victim man had reportedly spent some 20 months in an İzmir prison following the failed coup. He later fled to Germany in June 2019 in an attempt to avoid further prosecution in Turkey.

According to Bold news portal, Karaboyun started taking antidepressants during his 20-month incarceration. He was accused by the Turkish authorities of having links to the Gulen group, accused masterminding the failed coup. The group denies any involvement.

There have been frequent cases of suicide among purge victims since the failed coup.

Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight, as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 50,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
