A fundraising campaign has been launched for Fatma Gormez, a purge-victim teacher who is disabled, had a kidney transplant, 2 heart surgeries, and recently lost her hearing ability completely.
Fatma and her husband Bekir are accused of having ties to the Gulen group, which is accused by the Turkish government of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016.
The advocates of silenced Turkey released a statement regarding the fundraising campaing, caling on the poeple around the world to extend a helping hand to Fatma and her family.
“After the coup attempt in July 2016, tens of thousands of people have been arbitrarily detained in Turkey. Fatma Gormez, a teacher for 17 years, is among 170,000 public officials who have been dismissed by decree without due process. Fatma is severely disabled, had a kidney transplant, 2 heart surgeries, and recently lost her hearing ability completely.
Fatma’s husband Bekir is arbitrarily arrested and imprisoned since August 2016 (sentenced to 9 years) just because of a tweet…yes, 9 years just for a tweet! While Bekir was in prison and Fatma was severely disabled, their 14-year old son Berk died of cancer in January 2018. Despite all attempts, the authorities had not allowed Bekir to see his dying son one last time before his death. Fatma, weighing now only 29 kilograms (64 pounds), is between life and death. She has a daughter, Azize, whose father is in prison, whose brother died and whose mother is dying.
Today is our opportunity to save a human life. Fatma needs our help. Let’s give Fatma a ray of hope towards life, in her fight for her life, for her husband, and for her daughter. We are trying to do our best to let this case to be heard by as many people as possible.
In order to raise awareness, we are preparing multimedia reports, posters, fliers. We want to run ads in prestigious newspapers, create videos and reports to deliver effective human rights awareness campaigns and deliver speeches on human right platforms and international organizations…to urge the Turkish government to take the case of Fatma Gormez into consideration; and not only Fatma’s case, but also the cases of hundreds of thousands innocent people whose lives turned into hell in just one night.
We (Fatma’s friends, family and Fatma, especially) would be extremely grateful if you could donate to help cover these costs, and also send your positive thoughts and prayers, in this darkest time of Fatma’s family.
