Adem Gürbüz, a commissioned officer who spent some five months in prison after a coup attempt in 2016, committed a suicide at a mosque in İstanbul.
According to pro-Kurdish HDP deputy Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, Gürbüz suspended from his job after the coup attempt and spent some five months in prison until he was released on prending trial in late 2016.
His conditional release coincided with Turkey’s direct military intervention into Syria in 2016-2017. He was therefore sent to Syria, where he served as a commissioned officer in the army until August 2018.
Upon his returned, the Turkish army refused to renew his contract on the grounds that he was “a member of a terrorist organization,” despite lack of a court ruling.
Gürbüz, who reportedly spent almost a year looking for a new job after his dismissal, committed a suicide on January 21, 2020 at a mosque in İstanbul’s Dudullu district.
His body was found by the imam, according to Gergerlioğlu.
