A 51-year-old imprisoned man with advanced brain cancer has once again been denied release from prison on probation, despite health reports attesting to his poor health.
According to the Bold news portal, the purge-victim man, named Abdullah Aslan, has been in prison for 54 months over alleged links to the Gulen group, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in July 2016. The group denies any involvement.
Until he was fired from his job with a gov’t decree in the aftermath of the failed coup, Aslan used to work as a Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge teacher.
Aslan’s first operation was in 2007, but the tumor came back in 2017. Only three days after his second operation, Aslan was arrested, in December 2017. He was sentenced to 10 years, 15 months in prison, but the sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeals.
A year later Aslan’s retrial started, and in his first court appearance he denied all accusations and demanded his release.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the Gulen group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 50,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
