An Edirne man, identified as Fikret A., was arrested for helping his son-in-law escape from Turkey to Greece as an asylum seeker.
State-run Anadolu news agency said Apr 13 that gendarme detained Fikret A due his allegedly suspicious behavior near Turkey-Greece border.
Anadolu said gendarme found a video recording in Fikret A.’s mobile phone that reportedly shows the suspect’s illegal escape from Turkey to Greece.
“It is 4.30 in the morning. We are on our way with Father Fikret. I am wearing a normal-looking life vest. Today is the day we escape from Turkey. I decided to film this video just to mark the day. You can feel this in my voice. We will jump into the creek and try to cross the border ditching the gendarme. What would you like to say, father?” Anadolu quoted the fugitive as talking in the video.
Fikret A reportedly responded to his son-in-law as saying: “They can’t transcribe this video in case they catch us, right?” The son-in-law’s response was positive, according to Anadolu.
The news agency said the son-in-law faces an outstanding arrest warrant over his suspected ties to the Gulen movement and that Fikret A was jailed for aiding him.
Thousands of people have fled Turkey due to a massive witch-hunt launched by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government against all kinds of opposition.
More than 510,000 people have been detained and some 100,000 including academics, judges, doctors, teachers, lawyers, students, policemen and many from different backgrounds have been put in pre-trial detention since last summer.
Many tried to escape Turkey via illegal ways as the government cancelled their passports like thousands of others.
