President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on the Turkish parliament to pass laws that ban social media platforms, including Twitter and Netflix, due to the “recent increase of immoral acts” on these platforms.
The President’s address came a day after at least 19 social media users posted tweets insulting Erdogan’s son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, his daughter Esra Albayrak and the couple’s fourth child, who was born yesterday.
Turkish police said 11 of these social media users were detained on Wednesday.
Following Erdogan’s speech, Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), took to Twitter on Wednesday to express his support for the introduction of new regulations to control the use of social media, saying that his party will support bill proposals at the Turkish parliament.
