Büşra Uzunkaya, a chemistry teacher who was fired from her job after a coup attempt in 2016, was sent to a prison in Edirne on February 22 over alleged links to the Gulen group, which the government accuses of masterminding the coup attempt. The group denies any involvement.
According to Turkish Journalist Sevinç Özarslan, Uzunkaya is a mother of a four-year-old.
Following the arrest, Uzunkaya’s husband took to Twitter to call on the Turkish authorities to release the purge-victim women. “Please stop this cruelty. Let her go back to her daughter,” he tweeted.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the Gulen group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 90,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
