Hakan Kanat, a 41-year-old purge-victim with stage 4 thyroid cancer, has once again been denied release from prison on probation, despite health reports attesting to his poor health.
According to Kanat’s wife, Nesli Kanat, the purge-victim man has been in prison since July 24, 2016.
In 2018, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for having worked at a private student dormitory linked to the Gülen group, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in July 2016. The group denies any involvement.
However, the Supreme Court of Appeals overturned his sentence, and Kanat’s retrial started on November 2, 2021.
The Ankara Dışkapı Hospital has recently issued a medical report that suggested Kanat was fit to remain in prison.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the Gulen group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 50,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
