Ibrahim Enes Gacar, a 21-year-old university student, is in the 595th day of his imprisonment in İstanbul’s notorious Silivri prison over alleged links to Turkey’s Gulen group, accused by the government of masterminding a coup attempt.
Gacar was a student at Turkey’s prestigious Boğaziçi University. In March 2020 he moved back with his family due the COVID-19 pandemic. He was sent to prison in late December 2020. He was only 19 when he was arrested.
It was reported that his arrest came after a man, identified with initials L.K., accused him of membership in the Gulen group.
According to a social media account used by Enes’ family members, an İstanbul court ruled on July 6 for the continuation of Enes’ imprisonment. Human rights advocates and Boğaziçi University student groups expressed their solidarity with Gacar on social media.
