These two children have been accompanying their incarcerated mothers in İstanbul’s Bakırköy prison for over eighteen months, Turkish journalist Sevinç Özarslan reported.
Özarslan recently posted a picture of Ekrem (4) and his sister, Zülal (9) reportedly snapped in the yard of the prison in İstanbul.
Their mothers have been in prison over alleged links to the Gulen group, which the government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016. The group denies any involvement.
At least 345 children under the age of 6 are accompanying their mothers in Turkish prisons, according to Deutsche Welle Turkish service.
The number of children accompanying their mothers in prison skyrocketed in Turkey in the aftermath of a coup attempt in July 2016. According to a statement from Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu on February 20, 2021, a total of 622,646 people have been the subject of investigation and 301,932 have been detained, while 96,000 others have been jailed due to alleged links to the Gülen group.
