Nagehan Yüksel, a Turkish teacher who was fired from her job with a gov’t decree in 2016, was sent to İstanbul’s Bakırköy prison on Saturday, according to Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, a lawmaker from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
Yüksel is reportedly accused of having links to the Gulen group, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016. The group denies any involvement. Her husband has reportedly been in prison for over five years over similar charges.
The purge-vicrim woman was initially fired from her job by a gov’t decree issued in the aftermath of the failed coup. She has three kids.
Since the coup attempt, followers of the Gülen group have been subjected to a massive crackdown, with the Turkish government and pro-government media outlets demonizing its members.
In addition to the thousands who were jailed, scores of other Gülen group followers had to flee Turkey to avoid the government crackdown.
