A Turkish court on Wednesday sentenced 26 military cadets to life in prison once again for their “involvement” in a failed military coup in 2016.
Additionally, 11 others were sentenced to 12 years, 6 months in prison over similar charges.
The cadets originally stood trial in 2018 and were given life sentences on charges of attempting to overturn the constitutional order and attempting to overthrow the Turkish government and parliament by use of force as well as membership in a terrorist organization. But the verdict in that trial was later overturned on appeal by the Court of Appeal and a new trial ordered.
An İstanbul court, however, handed down similar sentences in yesterday’s retrial.
The cadets say they didn’t know a coup attempt was underway and were acting on orders from their superiors, who told them there was a terrorist attack.
The military coup attempt killed 251 people and wounded more than a thousand others. Immediately after the abortive putsch, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government along with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pinned the blame on the Gülen group. The group denies any involvement.
TRT- Digitürk davasında;
“Sadece 2 Harbiyelinin tahliyesine karar verilirken, 11 Harbiyeliye Darbeye Teşebbüse Yardım Etmekten, 26 Harbiyeliye Darbeye Teşebbüs Etmekten Cezalar yağdırdılar.”
Bizi masum olduğumuz halde böyle cezalandıranlar, yargılanacakları günü beklesin!
