Nuriye Gülmen and Yasemin Karadağ, two former teachers who were removed from their jobs as part of a government’s post-coup purge, have been sentenced to 10 years in prison over alleged links to a “terrorist organization.”
According to the Turkish media, the two educators staged a sit in the in court room in protest of the verdict.
Gülmen was fired from Konya Selçuk University for her alleged ties to the Gülen group, which the Turkish gov’t accuses of masterminding a coup attempt last year. She was arrested on terror charges in Ankara on May 23, 2017 while she was on a hunger strike demanding a reinstatement to her job. She was on the 76th day of their hunger strike when she was arrested.
In December 2017, she was given 6 years, 3 months prison sentence for “aiding and abetting a terrorist organization.”
The Turkish government started a crackdown on the opposition in the wake of the botched coup attempt on July 15, 2016 and arrested more than 50,000 and dismissed or suspended some 150,000 judges, teachers, police and civil servants.
