Mehmet Emre, a police commissioner who was fired from his job after a coup attempt in 2016, died of cerebral hemorrhage on Monday.
According to a Twitter account controlled by a group of people who were fired from their jobs with a gov’t decree in the aftermath of the failed coup attempt, Emre lost his life in the wee hours of Monday morning.
“A dismissed police commissioner… He was fired from his beloved job overnight. He died of from a cerebral hemorrhage earlier today,” the Twitter account said.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the Gulen group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 90,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
Since the coup attempt, there have been many cases of people who died in jail, some suspiciously, because they were denied crucial treatment or subjected to maltreatment or acts of torture.
